Equipment

  • Oven
  • Medium bowl
  • Spatula

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter equivalent to 1 stick
  • 1 large egg at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped nuts

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. It all begins with a good foundation.

Step 2: Mix Dry Ingredients

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, fine sea salt, ground cinnamon, and baking soda. Set aside. This part is crucial to make sure your dry ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 3: Cream the Butters and Sugars

  • In a large bowl, cream together the unsalted butter, dark brown sugar, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. This should take about 3-4 minutes.

Step 4: Add Wet Ingredients

  • Add in the egg and pure vanilla extract. Beat until well combined.

Step 5: Combine and Make Dough

  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture. Beat just until the dough begins to form. Don’t overmix!

Step 6: Fold in the Goodies

  • Gently fold in the semisweet chocolate chips and finely chopped nuts using a spatula.

Step 7: Scoop and Place

  • Using a cookie scoop or a tablespoon, scoop dough onto the prepared baking sheet. Make sure to give them enough space to spread out.

Step 8: Bake

  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are just turning golden brown. Don’t worry if the centers look a bit underdone; they will firm up as they cool.

Step 9: Cool and Enjoy

  • Allow the cookies to cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For the best cookies, keep these tips in mind:
  • Room Temp Ingredients: Ensure your egg and butter are at room temperature for even mixing.
  • Don’t Overmix: Overmixing can lead to tough cookies. Mix just until ingredients are combined.
  • Chill the Dough: Refrigerate the dough for at least 30 minutes if you want a thicker cookie.
  • Pre-measure Ingredients: Have everything ready to go before you start baking.
  • Even Scoops: An ice cream scoop can help ensure uniform cookie sizes.
