- To craft this delicious fruit leather gather the following ingredients:
- - 1 lb. strawberries about 4 cups, halved
- - 2 medium bananas roughly 2 cups, sliced
- - 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
- - 2 tablespoons of maple syrup a nice alternative to honey for added depth of flavor
- - Pinch of sea salt
- - 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for a subtle sweet touch
- Feel free to mix and match other fruits too—this recipe is very adaptable!
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Step 2: Blend the Ingredients
In a food processor or high-speed blender, combine the strawberries, bananas, lemon juice, maple syrup, sea salt, and vanilla extract. Blend until the mixture is silky smooth and there's no fruit chunk in sight! Taste it at this point—if you want to make it sweeter, feel free to add a bit more maple syrup.
Step 3: Pour and Spread
Pour the luscious fruit mixture onto the prepared baking sheet. Using a spatula, spread it evenly across the surface, making sure it reaches the corners. To ensure an even thickness, lift the baking sheet slightly and give it a gentle tap on your countertop. Aim for about 1/4 inch thick; too thick and it’ll take longer to dry!
Step 4: Bake Away
Place your baking sheet in the oven and let it bake for about 6-8 hours. Yes, I said hours! The key here is low and slow; you want it to dry out gradually. Check on it occasionally. The fruit leather is ready when it peels away easily from the parchment paper and feels firm throughout — no soft spots!
Step 5: Cut and Store
Once done, allow the fruit leather to cool. Use scissors to cut it into 12 strips or any shape you fancy. Store these delightful treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They should last for about 2-4 weeks, but I doubt they will last that long!
- Timing is Everything: Oven temperatures vary, so keep an eye on the fruit leather as it dries.
- Fruit Combinations: Experiment with different fruits. Peaches, apples, and mangoes work wonderfully!
- Consistency Check: If the leather is chewy but not sticky to the touch, you’re in the clear.
- Adjust Sweetness: If your fruits are particularly sweet, adjust the amount of maple syrup accordingly.
- No Parchment? If you don’t have parchment paper, a silicone baking mat can be a great alternative.
