Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Baking paper
  • Oven

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 small red onion
  • tsp ground nutmeg
  • 5 eggs 4 hard-boiled
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp marjoram
  • 1 lb ground beef best choice
  • 3 tbsp parsley chopped
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Vegeta Seasoning preferably Chicken Flavor Bouillon
  • 2 tbsp paprika powder
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or any
  • 1 slice white bread or buns I used 1 Ciabatta Roll

Instructions

Step 1: Prep Ingredients:

  • Begin by cooking 4 eggs until hard-boiled. Meanwhile, soak the slice of white bread or ciabatta roll in water and set it aside to absorb the water.

Step 2: Prepare Meat Mixture:

  • In a mixing bowl, place the ground beef. Add 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of Vegeta seasoning (or chicken bouillon), 2 tablespoons of paprika powder, and 3 tablespoons of chopped parsley to the meat. Mix everything thoroughly and allow it to sit while you prepare the other ingredients.

Step 3: Process Bread:

  • Squeeze out the excess water from the soaked bread and add it to the meat mixture. Also, beat in 1 egg to the mixture and continue to mix until everything is well combined.

Step 4: Season and Shape:

  • Taste the mixture and adjust the seasoning if needed. Add 1 tablespoon of marjoram and ⅔ teaspoon of ground nutmeg to the mixture and mix well. Divide the meat mixture into two parts, with one part being about two-thirds of the mixture and the other part about one-third.

Step 5: Assemble Meatloaf:

  • Line a medium-sized baking sheet with baking paper and lightly grease it with olive oil. Take the larger portion of the meat mixture and shape it into a flat rectangle on the baking sheet. Make a shallow indentation in the center of the meat.

Step 6:

  • Add Eggs: Peel the hard-boiled eggs and place them one after the other into the indentation in the meat mixture.

Step 7:

  • Cover with Remaining Meat: Take the smaller portion of the meat mixture and cover the eggs completely, shaping it into a loaf shape. Ensure that the eggs are completely encased in the meat mixture.

Step 8:

  • Brush with Oil and Coat with Breadcrumbs: Brush the top of the meatloaf with olive oil to help it brown while baking. Then, gently roll the entire meatloaf in breadcrumbs to create a crispy crust.

Step 9: Bake:

  • Preheat your oven to 385°F (196°C). Place the prepared meatloaf in the preheated oven and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the meatloaf is nicely browned on the outside and cooked through.

Step 10: Serve:

  • Once baked, remove the meatloaf from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Slice the meatloaf and serve it with a side salad and mashed potatoes for a hearty and satisfying meal.

Notes

  • – To add a depth of flavor, consider using a combination of sweet and smoked paprika.
  • – For a moist and tender meatloaf, avoid overmixing the ingredients, as this can lead to a tough texture.
  • – Adjust the seasonings to suit your taste preferences, adding more or less salt, pepper, or spices as desired.
  • – For a crispy exterior, brush the top of the meatloaf with olive oil before baking to achieve a golden crust.
  • – Experiment with different fillings such as cheese, bell peppers, or mushrooms to create exciting variations of Hungarian meatloaf.
