Equipment

  • Cutting Board
  • Large mixing bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of pre-chilled medium-sized shrimp – peeled, deveined, and tails removed
  • 2 ripe avocados – peeled pitted, and cubed
  • 2 ripe Roma tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1 crisp cucumber diced into small pieces
  • cup diced sweet Spanish onion
  • 1 jalapeño pepper seeded and finely minced
  • 1 stalk of celery finely minced
  • 1 bunch of fresh cilantro – only the leaves finely chopped
  • ¼ cup freshly pressed lime juice
  • 1 ½ cups of chilled tomato and clam juice blend
  • 1 cup of cool tangy ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of fiery hot pepper sauce
  • 2 teaspoons fine sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated garlic

Instructions

  • Here’s how to bring this delicious recipe to life, step by step.

Step 1: Prepare the Shrimp

  • Start with the shrimp. If they aren’t already pre-chilled, boil them quickly for just two to three minutes until they turn pink. Drain and rinse under cold water. This halts the cooking process and keeps them tender.

Step 2: Chop the Vegetables

  • While the shrimp cools, grab a cutting board. Dice the avocados, tomatoes, cucumber, onion, jalapeño, and celery. Aim for uniform pieces to ensure an even texture throughout the dish. Add a bit of lime juice to the avocado right away; it prevents browning.

Step 3: Combine Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the shrimp, chopped vegetables, and cilantro. Gently mix so that everything is well distributed but isn’t bruised.

Step 4: Make the Sauce

  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the lime juice, tomato and clam juice, ketchup, hot pepper sauce, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and garlic. This tangy sauce is where the magic happens.

Step 5: Marinate

  • Pour the sauce over the shrimp and vegetables. Stir gently until everything is coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.

Step 6: Serve

  • When you’re ready to serve, give everything a gentle toss. Scoop the mixture into cocktail glasses or bowls. Finish with an extra sprinkle of cilantro on top for presentation. Serve it chilled alongside your favorite sides.

Notes

Here are some tips to ensure your cocktail shines:
  • Freshness Matters: Use fresh shrimp and ripe vegetables for the best flavor.
  • Balance Your Heat: Adjust the amount of jalapeño to your taste. If you like it spicy, keep the seeds in; if not, remove them.
  • Adjust Your Acidity: If you prefer more tang, feel free to add more lime juice to brighten up the dish.
  • Chill Before Serving: Don’t skip the chilling step. It enhances the flavors and gives the shrimp a refreshing bite.
  • Experiment: This recipe is versatile. Feel free to add other ingredients, like diced mango or even a splash of tequila for a fun twist.
